Ivan Allen College Celebrates Women's History Month

March was Women's History Month. To mark the occasion, the Center for the Study of Women, Science and Technology, whose co-leaders include Carol Colatrella and Mary Frank Fox, hosted the 2021 Distinguished Lecture. We also surveyed faculty from across the College on how their research and scholarship examine questions and issues affecting women worldwide.

Alumna: My Nunn School Education Taught Me to Ask 'Why?'

Banafsheh Azizi, BSIA 2004, MSIA 2008, credits her Georgia Tech education with helping unlock her potential. “I often tell people, my education at Georgia Tech taught me to ask ‘why’ and be intrigued with the process of finding the answer, and that ultimately, there is no right answer,” explained Azizi. “The journey of finding my answers and truth is the definition of success for me. My Georgia Tech education laid the foundation, and it will continue to serve as a guiding principle for me.”

Neha Kumar in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs was promoted to associate professor and granted tenure, while Associate Professors Karen Head of the School of Literature, Media and Communication and Julia Melkers of School of Public Policy were promoted to professor. The promotions are effective Aug. 1.

Kaye Husbands Fealing, Marilyn Brown, Appointed to Boards

Dean Husbands Fealing and Marilyn Brown, Regents Professor and Brook Byers Professor of Sustainable Systems, each recently received news of notable appointments.

Husbands Fealing was reappointed to a second three-year term on the National Science Foundation's Committee on Equal Opportunities in Science and Engineering (CEOSE). She also was re-elected to the board of directors of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Brown was named to the board of the Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU).

Finance Director Janice Russell Retires

Russell worked at Georgia Tech for nearly 30 years and was known as a consummate professional in her field and a caring colleague. “When I think of Janice, I think of how much she genuinely cares about her work, her employees, her peers, and her customers,” said Jim Fortner, Georgia Tech’s interim executive vice president of Administration and Finance.
