An Interdisciplinary Approach to Regional Challenges

Alum Douglas Hooker is no stranger to an interdisciplinary approach. With a bachelor’s in mechanical engineering, an MBA from Emory University, and a master’s in technology and science policy from Georgia Tech, he is ideally situated as the executive director of the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC).

GPB Premieres Ivan Allen, Jr. Documentary

The original documentary Ivan Allen, Jr.- A Different Road premieres throughout the month of June on Georgia Public Broadcasting. Produced by Living Stories, the film creates a multifaceted portrait of Allen during his eight years of service as mayor of Atlanta during the critical transitional years between 1962 and 1970. As the only elected leader from the South to testify before Congress in favor of civil rights legislation, Allen differentiated Atlanta from the rest of the segregated South. Allen is a Georgia Tech alum (Commerce 1933).

Activist Films Bring Light to Human Trafficking in Atlanta

Atlanta is one of the top U.S. cities impacted by the underground commercial sex economy. LMC undergraduate student Jack McRee and Georgia Tech video production coordinator John Thornton are bringing awareness to the prevalence of human trafficking in Atlanta through personal narratives and calls to action unfolding on film.

Royster Joins World Affairs Council of Atlanta

Ivan Allen College Dean Jacqueline J. Royster joined the Board of Directors of the World Affairs Council of Atlanta on June 15. The Council provides a forum for dialogue, a source of expertise, and an engine for research on international issues affecting Atlanta. The board is comprised of corporate, academic, and civil leaders.

Ivan Allen College Faculty in Washington, D.C.

Alasdair Young (Nunn School) spoke on the distinctive politics of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations at the U.S. Department of State on May 18. Just three days later, on May 21, Marilyn Brown (Public Policy) met with staff at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)  to discuss low-carbon electricity pathways.

Public Policy Alumna Testifies before House Subcommittee

Elizabeth Noll (MS Public Policy, 2011), energy efficiency advocate at the Natural Resources Defense Council, testified before the House of Representatives Energy and Power subcommittee on April 23. The hearing focused on a recently released discussion draft of potential energy efficiency legislation.

Ivan Allen College Around the World

The College's worldwide presence continues to grow. Joe Bankoff (Nunn School Chair) gave a series of talks and met with faculty at the China European International Business School (CEIBS) on May 7. Michael Best and graduate students Amanda Meng (Ph.D., Nunn School), Michael Madaio (M.S., Digital Media), and Paul Lazarus (M.S., HCI) presented at the Information & Communication Technologies & Development Conference held May 15-18 in Singapore. Kirk Bowman (Nunn School) began his summer travels taking students to Argentina and Uruguay. Katja Weber (Nunn School) and her students are producing video documentaries to capture their time in Southeast Asia. Brian Woodall travels between Tokyo and Sendai to teach courses to international and local students.

Peer-Reviewed Journal to be Housed in the Georgia Tech Communication Center

Exciting things are happening in the Communication Center. As of June 1, Director Karen Head assumed the role of editor of the journal Southern Discourse in the Center: A Journal of Multiliteracy and Innovationone of four peer-reviewed journals that focus on writing center scholarship. Additionally, four new Brittain Fellows will be joining the center in the fall, all of whom have writing center experience and two of whom have won national tutoring awards. Jordan, Davis-Faulkner, and Jenkins Speak at TEDx Events

On March 21, Jenna Jordan (Nunn School) gave a talk at TEDx Nashville exploring findings from her current book manuscript focusing on leadership decapitation of terrorist organizations (video).

On April 28, Office of the Dean staff members spoke at the TEDxAtlanta event BOLD MOVES, with the focus on community building and forging bonds through art and culture. Sheri Davis-Faulker delivered a talk about connecting communities to progress and prosperity (video) and DeShawn Jenkins presented the Africa Atlanta 2014 initiative (video).

Economics Launches Nationwide Alumni Event Series

Chair of Economics David N. Laband and Ivan Allen College Director of Development Juan McGruder hosted an Economics alumni dinner at the Strand Hotel Bistro on May 20 in New York City as well as an alumni event in Atlanta on May 29. Based on the success of these events, future Economics alumni dinners are in the works for June and July in Washington, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Nashville, Houston, Austin, and Tampa.

Army ROTC Cadets Complete Air Assault School

Fifteen cadets from the Stinger Battalion, the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) unit housed within the Ivan Allen College, completed the U.S. Army’s Air Assault School in Fort Campbell, Kentucky on May 18. The 10-day course is designed to prepare soldiers for missions that call for the use of multipurpose transportation and assault helicopters.
