$50,000 Continues Joel V. O'Neal Endowment Fund in Economics

A new $50,000 commitment continues to support the Joel V. O’Neal Endowment Fund in the School of Economics.  Established in 2006, the endowment by Lou D. O’Neal and Vernon J. O'Neal (ECON 1979 and advisory board member) honors their late husband and father.

Spurlocks' Ongoing Generosity Enables Semester Abroad

Gail and Barry Spurlock (ME 1965) presented a check for $50,000 to Professor Bettina Cothran for the Spurlock Study Abroad Scholarship Endowment Fund. Established in 2012 and endowed in perpetuity, the scholarships enable students enrolled in the German Program and German Languages for Business and Technology (LBAT) to study in Germany for a semester. The Fund resides in the Ivan Allen College School of Modern Languages.

Seminar Room Dedicated to Melvin Kranzberg

Through the generous support of the B and B Stern Foundation, the Melvin Kranzberg Seminar Room has been established in the Old Civil Engineering Building, home of the School of History, Technology, and Society (HTS). Present for the dedication were donor Reed Catlett (photo center) who is a member of the Kranzberg family and a trustee of the Foundation, John Stern (left), and HTS Chair Steve Usselman (right).

New NROTC Scholarship Honors George Henderson Sr.

A new scholarship for the Navy Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NROTC) at Georgia Tech honors George Robert Henderson, Sr., a veteran of the United States Navy and native of Newnan, Georgia. Inaugural recipients of the scholarship are Georgia Tech students Rebekah Day and Anthony Guidera. EU Ambassador O'Sullivan Visits Nunn School

Georgia Tech welcomed the Ambassador of the European Union, His Excellency David O’Sullivan, for a talk highlighting the Transatlantic Partnership and discussing European and international issues ranging from relations with Russia and negotiations with Iran to human trafficking and energy. Ambassador O'Sullivan was welcomed by Alasdair Young, Nunn School Professor and Jean Monent Chair, and Vicki Birchfield, Co-Director for the Center for European and Transatlantic Studies (CETS).

Poetry@Tech Workshops Offer a Measure of Healing in a Nontraditional Setting

Poetry@Tech is giving back to the greater Atlanta community, offering free workshops to schools, assisted living centers, and prisons. Recent workshops at Positive Impact, a treatment program for HIV+ adults with a history of substance abuse, indicate that the act of assessing and expressing one's emotions through poetry's tightly structured forms are helping to mitigate the mental isolation that many recovering addicts must overcome.

Macrakis Awarded Wilson Center Fellowship

Kristie Macrakis, professor in the School of History, Technology, and Society, has been named a recipient of a prestigious fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, D.C. The fellowship term will continue through the 2015-2016 academic year, during which Macrakis will be conducting work on technology and the rise of the U.S. National Security State for a book tentatively titled The Technophiles.

Bankoff Inducted into Morehouse Collegium of Scholars

Joe Bankoff, chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, gave the opening remarks at the Peace Builders Conference, sponsored by Atlantic Institute and Morehouse College on April 9. He was among those inducted into the Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers, Board of Sponsors and Collegium of Scholars during the Morehouse College Crown Forum Induction Ceremony later that day. Bankoff was additionally honored this past April at the 2015 Luminaries reception hosted by the Woodruff Arts Center for his efforts in championing arts in education. Georgia Tech Hosts 30th Annual INCS Conference

Approximately 40 students, faculty, alumni and researchers from the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts participated in the Interdisciplinary Nineteenth Century Studies (INCS) annual conference in April, hosted by Georgia Tech. This year's conference theme was "Mobilities," seeking to explore mobility and immobility of ideas, afillitations, and networks in the nineteenth century.

HTS Hosts "Sustainable Cities and Just Sports" Workshop

The School of History, Technology, and Society hosted "Sustainable Cities and Just Sports," a workshop featuring panels with scholars discussing issues surrounding sports and the city. Headed by Mary McDonald, the Homer Rice Chair in Sports and Society, panel discussions ranged in topic from historical and contemporary perspctives on sustainable sport to the social and envrionmental politics os sport and cities. McDonald is also heading the Ivan Allen College initative in Sports, Society, and Technology, an interdisciplinary effort meging ideas from architecture, policy, physiology, and economics, among others.

Kosal and Smith Recognized for Outstanding Teaching

Two assistant professors in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, Margaret E. Kosal (Nunn School) and John Matthew Smith (HTS), were awarded the 2015 CETL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award at the annual Faculty and Staff Honors Luncheon on April 17, 2015.

Poultry Salmonella Project Wins Policy Category at Capstone Design

Farmaceuticals, a project addressing salmonella incidence in humans through poultry feed and sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), took the top honor in the public policy category during the Spring 2015 Capstone Design Expo held Thursday, April 23.
