Ivan Allen College Day on April 7 to Introduce New Celebration and Distinguished Alumni Awards

The Ivan Allen College will launch a new college-wide celebration this spring replacing the annual Founder’s Day. Ivan Allen College Day on April 7 includes a daytime faculty, student, and staff award celebration, international sandwich bar, and a social photo booth. A lecture hosted by LMC will follow.

Alumni Social and Awards Program - alumni and friends are invited for networking, wine, and hors d’oeuvres followed by the inaugural presentation of Distinguished Alumni Awards honoring individuals from each of the College's six schools. The Dean's Appreciation Award will be presented to Berkshire Capital founder H. Bruce McEver (IE 1966). The Ivan Allen Jr. Legacy Awards will also be presented. The Dean's office and featured school Literature, Media, and Communication extend cordial invitations to alumni, students, faculty, staff, friends, and supporters of the College.

Mitchell Appointed to New FCC Committee

Helena Mitchell, Regents Researcher in the School of Public Policy, has been appointed to serve on a newly formed committee of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The Disability Advisory Committee will provide advice and recommendations to the Commission on a wide array of disability matters and facilitate the participation of people with disabilities in Commission proceedings.

Young Named EUSA Chair

Alasdair Young has been selected as the new chair of the 500 member European Union Studies Association (EUSA) for 2015-2017. As chair, Young will lead the seven-member Executive Committee in promoting the study of the European Union in the U.S., advancing the association, and organizing the association conference in Miami in 2017. He has served as vice-chair of the committee since 2013.

Bankoff Appointed Midtown Alliance Chair

Joseph Bankoff, chair of The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, has been appointed the new chairman of Atlanta's Midtown Alliance. Bankoff’s perspective on the midtown “innovation zone” draws upon his experience in the arts, business, law, technology, and higher education.

Juan McGruder, director of development for the Ivan Allen College, has been selected to receive the 2015 Pathways to Excellence award, an honor bestowed by the Clark Atlanta University (CAU) National Alumni Association.

Nunn School Unveils New Global Development Minor

The Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering will begin offering a joint minor in Global Development starting in Fall 2015. The minor will prepare students to be catalysts for improving the lives of the world’s vulnerable communities in a sustainable manner. It will combine engineering, technology, and design with the social sciences and humanities to solve practical problems in the developing world.

Georgia Tech Solidifies Partnership with Liberia

Signaling nearly a decade of partnership between Georgia Tech and the Republic of Liberia, the two parties have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) solidifying their relationship around communication technologies and development. The technology partnership with Liberia has been anchored by Georgia Tech Associate Professor Michael Best, who is jointly appointed in the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs and the School of Interactive Computing.

‘A Gathering of Continents’

Georgia Tech’s Price Gilbert Memorial Library and the Robert C. Williams Museum of Papermaking are propviding visitors a unique passport back in time to the early mappings of the earth by featuring A Gathering of Continents. The exhibit showcases a 17th century edition of Joan Blaeu’s Grooten atlas, one of only a few remaining of its kind.

GT and GSU to host First Latino American Media Studies Symposium

Georgia Tech and Georgia State University will host the first Latino American Media Studies Symposium on March 26 from 1 - 5 p.m. on both campuses. The event is sponsored by the School of Modern Languages, the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies at Georgia Tech, and the School of Arts and Sciences at Georgia State University.

A Fruitful Collaboration

Carl DiSalvo, associate professor of digital media in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication, and foraging activist and Tech alumnus Craig Durkin are teaming up to make sure the bounty of Atlanta’s neglected fruit trees is not wasted. Initial research was conducted by computational media undergraduates Caroline Foster, Tasmia Alam, and Karl Kim and digital media Ph.D. student Tom Jenkins.
