Royster Reappointed as Dean
Following a review over recent months, Jacqueline Jones Royster, dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, has been reappointed for a second term. Royster was lauded for her prioritization of growing Ivan Allen’s reputation both on and off campus, along with other leadership qualities.
Royster was also commended for articulating the role of the liberal arts at Tech. Her particular emphasis on civic leadership aligns with Tech’s strategic goals of graduating good global citizens and instilling public service as a priority in graduates.

Best to Spearhead United Nations University Institute
Michael L. Best, associate professor of international affairs and computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, has been appointed as director of the newly formed United Nations University Institute on Computing and Society (UNU-CS) based in Macau, China.

Alum Trey Childress Appointed to State of Illinois “Turnaround Team”
Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner announced the appointment of Trey Childress, an Ivan Allen College alum and advisory board member, as the state’s deputy governor and part of a three-person “turnaround team” to address what he called a “current trajectory that is unsustainable as a state.”

LMC Publishes Groundbreaking Book
The School of Literature, Media, and Communication has released its first-ever book, Humanistic Perspectives in a Technological World, which offers a unique collection of essays on the interplay between the two and strives to spark conversations between students, researchers, and departments.

Georgia Tech and Emory Launch Partnership on Multi-faith Leadership
A public symposium Feb. 18 on "Compassion and Leadership in a Multi-Faith World" is the inaugural event of the newly established Leadership and Multi-Faith Program (LAMP), a joint initiative between Georgia Tech’s Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and Emory University's Candler School of Theology.

Inaugural Ivan Allen College Day Announced for April 7
Ivan Allen will launch a new college-wide celebration this spring. The Ivan Allen College Day on April 7 will offer a wider array of events for alums and students. Festivities will include an awards program and reception for faculty, staff, and students and an evening program inaugurating the Distinguished Alumni Awards and including the Ivan Allen, Jr. Legacy Awards.
The events are intended to be more inclusive of alumni and students, as well as faculty and staff. They replace Founder’s Day which has been celebrated annually since 2001. Presentation of the Ivan Allen Prize for Social Courage will occur during events separate from the college-wide celebration.

Clark Elected Vice-Chair/Chair of Economic Geography Specialty Group
Jennifer Clark has been elected to serve as vice-chair and chair of the Economic Geography Specialty Group of the Association of American Geographers (AAG). She will serve as vice-chair through 2016, at which point she will take up the position of chair through 2018.

Brian Woodall (Nunn School) spoke at the Third International Educational Forum on Energy and Environmental Science held in Perth. The Forum, co-sponsored by Tokyo Tech and the University of Western Australia, brought together international specialists in a range of energy- and environment-related fields.

Places and Spaces: Mapping Science
Places & Spaces: Mapping Science, a traveling exhibit and 10-year effort, has made its way to Georgia Tech. The display features Patent Mapping, one of ten maps included in the exhibit and devised by a group of School of Public Policy faculty, alumni, and colleagues.

Wealth and Knowledge in the Global North and South
There's something innovative and unusual going on in South Africa, and Anne Pollock has a front row seat. The focus of her latest ethnographic research is a Johannesburg-based pharmaceutical start-up named iThemba, the Zulu word for hope. The idea behind the company, headquartered on the grounds of a historic Nobel dynamite factory, is to discover novel pharmaceuticals for the prevention and treatment of unmet medical needs in Africa.

LMC Hosts International Medievalism Conference
The 29th International Conference on Medievalism came to Georgia Tech this year drawing over one hundred scholars from eight countries. The conference has previously been held in Austria, Britain, France, and the Netherlands. The conference theme, "Medievalisms on the Move," was inspired by the School of Literature, Media, and Communication speaker series on mobilities. Nine LMC undergraduate students of LMC Chair Richard Utz, who is president of the International Society for the Study of Medievalism, presented on medieval examples in Atlanta, a quintessential modern American city.

Commemorative Wall Honors Teaching Excellence
A new commemorative wall has been erected on the fourth floor of the Clough Undergraduate Learning Commons (CULC), honoring some of Georgia Tech’s best teachers throughout the years. Nearly 60 of the names featured on the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) Teaching Wall belong to faculty members and academic departments in the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts.

Scholarship for Study in Russia Covers Tuition and Dorm
Three years ago, under the auspices of a Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) U.S.-Russia Program grant, Georgia Tech began sending students to St. Petersburg State Polytechnic University (SPbSTU), a Russian national research university. Last year three Georgia Tech students completed academic programs in bioengineering, mathematics, and mechanical engineering. They clearly impressed their hosts! To sustain and further develop the relationship with Georgia Tech, SPbSTU will replace the outgoing FIPSE Scholarship by waiving both tuition and dormitory fees for Tech students.

Dean Royster Hand-Delivers Early Actions to AIS Students
Nineteen seniors at the Atlanta International School (AIS) received hand-delivered early action acceptances from Georgia Tech on January 16.
Jacqueline Royster, dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts, and Mary Tipton Woolley, associate director of admissions, personally gave the chosen seniors their early action acceptances in what has become an annual practice.
